Report from Development and Peace on Emergency Relief Aid to Haiti
The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace is the official development agency of the Church in Canada, and respects the sacredness of human life from conception to its natural end. By contributing to Development and Peace…our gifts can bear fruit for the life of the world. To serve Christ, we are invited to follow his example – to give of ourselves, that others may live. (Letter of Archbishop V. James Weisgerber, President, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops) The Bishops of Canada founded Development and Peace in 1967.
The (Canadian) Bishops believe in the project of Development and Peace and appreciate the excellent work this organization has done throughout the years. They also want to support the continuation of this important apostolate of the Church in Canada. To this end, the Bishops wish to collaborate with Development and Peace to ensure that the implementation of its mandate is in harmony with the identity and mission of the Church. (2009 CCCB Plenary Assembly)
Development and Peace is the Canadian Branch of Caritas Internationalis, and through that channel it is able to quickly distribute aid and emergency relief in times of conflict or national disaster. To learn more about Caritas Internationalis, click here.

The stamps affixed on the right corner of your envelopes can be very useful. Members of Development and Peace, who are philatelists, will sell them to stamp collectors. The proceeds will help fund development projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America. If you wish to support this initiative, simply cut off the stamps from your envelopes without damaging perforations, and send them to Development and Peace. Thank you for your support. (2 Corinthians 9: 8)
We can never forget the many people elsewhere who are also living in the midst of catastrophes, although ones which move more slowly and silently: hunger, injustice, violence, environmental degradation, lack of resources, and marginalization. Without our help to groups and people who are struggling to remedy injustice, defend the rights of the weakest and speak on behalf of the poor, those suffering would be passed by in silence.
(Letter from Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for Lent 2010)
